Social Justice Committee
Mission Statement
The Social Justice committee helps the Congregation live its religious principles. It encourages
members and friends of our religious community to use their resources, talents, and skills
to make the world a better place to live.
We invite you to discover your mission in our midst.
Current Projects
- The Social Justice Committee and the Environmental Covenant Group are working to
establish the church as a "Green Sanctuary." This Seventh
Principle Project will attempt to bring the church into compliance with environmentally
friendly practices. By joining the Green Sanctuary Committee you can make a difference locally and globally.
- "The Threat of Global Warming." is a Study/Action
Issue topic selected by the General Assembly of Unitarian Universalist Congregations and is derived from the selection process
of the UUA's Commission on Social Witness. By Forming a group to study this issue, we can
influence our denomination's actions as well as inform our own local work.
- Our church has committed to using Fair Trade Coffee during coffee hour. In doing so, we are
participating in the UUSC Coffee Project,
which is a partnership between the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC)
and Equal Exchange. This partnership supports
small farmers in the developing world to earn a living wage for their work. Buy Fair Trade Coffee and sell or give it to your friends and family.
- During the Christmas season, we sold over $2,500 worth of fair trade crafts on consignment
from Colores del Pueblo, a fair trade organization
dedicated to directly assisting Latin American artisans and farmers. You can help make our marketing efforts expand.
- The church is a member of the Merrimack Valley Project, a regional coalition of forty member
churches and synagogues, labor union locals, and tenant organizations whose purpose is to
"promote the welfare of the Merrimack Valey region through the joint efforts of organizations
committed to the dignity and freedom of all men and women without regard to religious creed,
national origin, social station, race, or color." Join us as we participate in the activities of this vital justice organization.
Ongoing Projects
- The church hosts a bi-weekly community meal which is prepared and served in our basement for the hungry and the homeless. Serve yourself while serving others.
- The church's basement hosts the Open Hand Pantry, run by Catholic Charities, which provides food to approximately 400 people. On the first Sunday of the month, bring in your food donations and place them in the Giving Chalice.
- The church hosts the Haverhill Hunger Roundtable, which meets monthly, and discusses issues which help Haverhill organizations better serve those in need.
- The Cornucopia Project grows and distributes thousands of ears of corn to various organizations around Haverhill. This summer the project will be hosted by Haverhill's Tattersall Farm and Environmental Center.
